Recently, various individuals in one of UCLA's schools received an email - ostensibly from the dean - with a cryptic message such as "Can you call me?" According to IT folks, the scammers pick an official, such as a dean, and then send such messages to individuals who appear lower on the totem pole, hoping for a response. Apparently, there is a surge of such messages being sent to UCLA email addresses at present. There is no actual hacking involved since UCLA email addresses are easily obtained.
The scammers hope recipients will respond. So don't. If you think a message might be legit from, say, a dean, you can separately email that person using their UCLA email address. Just don't hit reply to the initial message. Delete it.
