From the Chronicle of Higher Education: In its latest push to overhaul federal research funding, the White House... stated its intention to divert research grants away from universities and toward “individual researchers.” The 123-page report, “Science: A New Golden Age,” crystallizes the Trump administration’s vision for the American scientific enterprise, breaking away from the decades-old university research system in favor of private companies, independent projects, and artificial intelligence-driven research...*
Researchers who spoke to The Chronicle, however, are more than skeptical that the shift would accelerate scientific discovery. They’re also unconvinced that the White House’s vision for science aligns with the realities and needs of American researchers... Many of the administrative burdens alluded to in the report, researchers said, are imposed by the federal government itself, not universities. Researchers have long complained of growing bureaucratic burdens tied to federal grant regulations, with 66 percent of new federal research regulations having been introduced within the past decade. Universities can lessen that burden by providing administrative staff to help cut through red tape, while private ventures and “individual” researchers might have less capacity to properly document that they’re following regulations...
“The reason why scientists are concentrated at institutions is because the labs that they use are expensive,” [Melinda] Rostal, [an epidemiologist and a member of the organization Defend Public Health,] said. “All that infrastructure is needed by the researchers.” ...
