From the San Francisco Chronicle: The University of California gave San Francisco disappointing news this week: It will not open a campus in the city’s flagging downtown. A new school would be too expensive, UC said. “Given the outlook for state appropriations and the financial capacity of our campuses, the university is not considering establishing any new campuses or other new facilities in the City of San Francisco at this time,” Ryan King, a UC spokesperson, told the Chronicle this week. 

Mayor London Breed wrote to the UC regents last July inviting them to open a campus downtown. Touting the opportunities for students in San Francisco, Breed also dangled the availability of many properties to choose from and noted that the city has a “distinctive talent pool,” a “storied history of successful innovation” and plenty of artificial intelligence chops. For the past year, both sides have said only that they were “in talks.” This week, UC ended the speculation...
