We noted in previous postings that two weeks away from the December 14th date, the Regents had set in their November meeting to make a decision on UCLA's move to the Big Ten, nothing had appeared on the Regents' webpage except the long-planned meeting of the Health Services Committee. The Big Ten meeting has now finally appeared on the website. As in past Big Ten sessions, the really interesting stuff is likely to be discussed behind closed doors. But there will also be an open session.
Reversing the decision of UCLA Chancellor Block would be a Big Deal - with potentially expensive legal perils - since Block was fully authorized to act as an agent of the Regents under current policy. So, yes, the Regents could void the agreement. But if they do, there would likely be consequences in terms of costly litigation. Are they prepared for such consequences?
Moreover, the Regents - if they overrule Block - would be setting a precedent which could make anyone or any organization signing a legitimate contract with a UC campus nervous about whether it would be honored. Do the Regents want to undermine the authority of campus chancellors?
It will be interesting, in addition to these questions, to see whether Governor Newsom, who started this ruckus, shows up for the session.
