In Between

Two places to be between
Reading official policy?
Inside Higher Ed runs an article on the problems of the growing requirements of sexual assault policies on university campuses.* Specifically, it appears that at some institutions, faculty are caught between requirements that any such assault must be reported to authorities and a student request for confidentiality or to discuss but not to report. The issue arises because sexual assault is a crime and university personnel (including faculty) are not generally trained in police work. Faculty are like Rosencrantz and Guildenstern in this particular drama, secondary characters who nonetheless are in a situation in which they can face major consequences from the actions and policies of others. It would be nice if the major players would consider the roles of those on the sidelines.
